Lady Wildcats improve times at East Texas Baptist University Tiger Invitational
Running 15 minutes away from campus, the Wiley College women’s cross country team improved its time in the East Texas Baptist University Tiger Invitational Saturday at Marshall City Arena.
Maureen Rono, who is a two-time Red River Athletic Conference Runner of the Week, was the Lady Wildcats’ top finisher with a ninth-place finish in the six-kilometer race (24:32.15). Shamona Hunt finished 15th (25:20.22). Rono was impressed with her Hunt’s performance.
“For a sprinter to run a fast time in a 6K is pretty good,” Rono said. “We are all showing improvement.”
Danielle David finished 56th (28:52.18). In her first cross country meet, Natasha Poleon finished 57th (29:01.45). During the spring, Poleon was one of the Lady Wildcats top sprinters on the track. Abigael Chepchumba finished 67th (29:54.97). Leslie Bethea finished 81st (32:03.07).
Along with fellow NAIA schools – Louisiana State University-Shreveport, Truett McConnell University and Louisiana College – Wiley College also ran against NCAA Division III programs – East Texas Baptist University, LeTourneau University, Belhaven University, University of Texas-Tyler, University of Texas-Dallas, McMurry University and Millsaps University. The Lady Wildcats finished eighth in the team standings.
“Everyone improved their times, which is good,” head coach Marlon Baugh said. “I was looking more at time than position.”
The Lady Wildcats will travel to Clinton, Mississippi, next week for the Mississippi College Invitational.
