Marshall ISD Pushes First Day Of School Back To September 11

MARSHALL, Texas – Due to the delay in substantial completion of the new Marshall Junior High School, Marshall ISD has revised its 2017-2018 school calendar to push back the first day of school to Monday, Sept. 11, for all campuses.
The revision to the school calendar was approved Monday by the MISD Board of Trustees during their regular July meeting.
The two-week delay from the original starting date of Aug. 28 will allow for all MISD students to begin school at the same time, rather than staggering different campuses and grade levels. An adjustment of minutes to the school day and an added week at the end of the year will allow the district to make up the annual minutes requirement as mandated by the Texas Education Agency.
MISD will be opening four new schools along with a renovated Sam Houston Elementary for the 2017-2018 school year. RLM Contractors, the general contractor for the new Marshall Junior High, requested a two-week extension to the original contract in June due to construction delays.
Although the three new elementary schools at William B. Travis, David Crockett and Price T. Young, along with the renovated Sam Houston Elementary, are on track to be complete and ready for the former targeted start date, district officials determined the best course of action was to delay the start of school district-wide rather than open the junior high late.
“Logistically, all things considered, this is the best option of a challenging situation,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Jerry Gibson. “We considered all kinds of options leading up to this but we feel the least disruptive and most manageable choice was to delay the start of school district-wide for two weeks. With the Labor Day holiday (Sept. 4), we are only looking at pushing the first day of school back nine school days, and everyone will begin the year in their new school at the same time.”
The last day of school for 2017-2018 will be pushed back to Friday, June 8, 2018. The original calendar had the last day of school set for May 30.
Teachers will now report back from summer break on Tuesday, August 15. The two-week delay in the start of school will also allow teachers more time to prepare new classrooms for the first day of school in the new buildings.
All holidays in the calendar will remain the same. The only noticeable change to the calendar in terms of school holidays will be in January, with both students and teachers returning from Christmas break on Monday, January 8 instead of January 9.
The new calendar will affect the MISD Athletic Department slightly, although fall sports teams at Marshall High School will report on dates as previously scheduled. The only noticeable change to athletic schedules will be the delay of the start of fall sports programs at Marshall Junior High, where teams cannot practice until the designated first day of school.
Athletic programs and schedules at Marshall High School will not be affected by the calendar change.
Marshall High School and Washington Early Childhood Center will start classes on Sept. 11 as well, even though those campuses are not part of the Legacy 2017 building program.
Grand openings for each of the new facilities will also be rescheduled. Dates and times for grand openings are as follows:
- David Crockett Elementary School – Thursday, Aug. 24, 6:00 p.m.
- Price T. Young Elementary School – Tuesday, Aug. 29, 6:00 p.m.
