Lady Wildcats win first game of the season over St. Gregory’s

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – The Wiley College volleyball team finished the Sooner Athletic Conference and Red River Athletic Conference Clash with its first win of the season over St. Gregory’s (19-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-13) Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats (1-3) went on a 7-1 run in the second set to take a 22-14 lead. Alissa Johnson and Rebecca Moustapha each recorded two kills. Noemi Garza also got a kill during the run. Wiley took advantage of two attack errors. Johnson recorded two more kills and a St. Gregory’s attack error clinched the set for the Lady Wildcats.

Wiley held a seven-point lead in the third set. St. Gregory’s rallied and cut the lead to one. Olena Fedorenko scored two kills and Johnson added one. An SGU attack error gave the Lady Wildcats a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was controlled by Wiley as it built a double digit lead and didn’t look back. Coach LaKyva Bason said it was exciting getting the win.

“That first win is the foundation for us to build on,” Bason said. “Winning is always good for confidence. It didn’t come easy. St. Gregory’s is a scrappy little team that kept sending the ball right back over. They kept fighting. Overall, I’m pleased with the efforts of my team.”

Jayme Bazile and Johnson shared the lead in kills with 12. Moustapha also reached double digits with 11. Miyah Keller recorded a match-high 23 digs. Moustapha led the team with three blocks. Garza led the team with 19 assists. Sydnie Beckett recorded 15 assists.

Before beating St. Gregory’s, the Lady Wildcats lost in three sets to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (20-25, 19-25, 20-25). Statistics from the game were not made available by the SAGU Sports Information Office.

Wiley College will start play in the Oklahoma Wesleyan Invitational against the host Oklahoma Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Friday in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
