Wildcats start strong at Patriot Invite

MANSFIELD, Texas – The Wiley College men’s cross country team had three runners finish in the top 15 at the Patriot Invite hosted by Dallas Baptist University Saturday.

In his debut meet, Laban Kandie finished third out of 84 runners with a time of 25:51.03 for a mile pace of 5:12. Coach Marlon Baugh, who is a candidate for Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, said he was shooting for first.

“He thought he had another lap,” Baugh said. “He misjudged his race but he did great.”

Leonard Kiprono, a Red River Athletic Conference Runner of the Year candidate, finished 12th at 26:50.6. Marbeq Edgar finished 13th in his debut at 26:55.7. Mauricio Rosas finished 65th at 31:46.4 and Darion De La Rosa finished 66th (32:09.4) to round out the Wildcats’ scoring of 121 points – which was fifth. Roger Ali finished 78th (39:44.1). Overall, Baugh was pleased with how his team ran.

“It did great,” Baugh said. “My runners did what I asked.”
