Lady Wildcats win last two games at Oklahoma Wesleyan Invitational
BARTLESVILLE, Oklahoma – The Wiley College volleyball team ends the Oklahoma Wesleyan Invitational on a high note with victories against St. Gregory’s University (25-12, 22-25, 25-16, 25-19) and Southwestern Assemblies of God University (26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 28-26) Saturday.
“We played together as a team,” acting head coach Tenesha Robinson said. “It showed and we came out with two wins.”
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak vs. SAGU. The Lady Wildcats jumped out to an 11-5 lead but lost momentum in the first set. Facing set-point and trailing by four, Wiley College rallied and scored the final six points to win the set.
The Lady Wildcats fell behind early in the second set but went on a run and took the lead. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to hold on and SAGU responded to tie the match. In the third set, Wiley’s back was against the wall as the Lady Lions were two points away from clinching the set. The Lady Wildcats again rallied and scored the final four points of the set, to move within a victory of clinching the match.
Wiley College trailed most of the fourth set but made a late surge to be in position to clinch the match. Southwestern Assemblies of God tied the match and a close call at the line left Wiley facing set point. The Lady Wildcats tied the match at 25 and overcame another set point situation. Wiley was able to shut the door on the match.
“We had good communication,” Robinson said. “They worked hard and played well as a team.”
Rebecca Moustapha led the team with 16 kills and 12 blocks. Sydnie Beckett recorded 24 assists and Noemi Garza added 19. Miyah Keller led the team with 24 digs. Lucille Ricord had 13 and Beckett had 12. Olena Fedorenko led the team with three serving aces. Renata Silva recorded three kills and six blocks. Jayme Bazile had six kills and seven blocks.
After a dominating first set against St. Gregory’s, the Lady Wildcats came up just short in the second set. Wiley was in control of the third set and didn’t give up the lead. The Lady Wildcats started strong in the fourth set but a St. Gregory’s rally put them behind by one. Wiley went on a 5-2 run to hold a 19-17 lead that it never relinquished.
The Lady Wildcats will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas, and face Philander Smith College at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Wiley swept Philander Smith at home last season. The Lady Panthers are led by former Lady Wildcat Alexis Lowe, who was a setter on the 2008 Red River Athletic Conference Championship team.
