ETBU women’s tennis splits wins in last week’s matches

AUSTIN – Facing a tough task taking on two of the finest teams in our region, the #37 East Texas Baptist University women’s tennis team went split their matches on the day. After winning match one, 8-1, over Texas Lutheran University to improve their program best start to 9-0, ETBU took their first loss of the year, 8-1, to #24 Trinity University.
ETBU 8, TLU 1
ETBU started off with a 3-0 lead in doubles winning all three matches but four or more points. Nationally ranked Kayla Casey and Kate Bramlett won doubles #1, 8-4, over Sofia Vega and Alli McClain. Elizabeth Morton and Tiffany Stankiewicz won the #2 match, 8-2, and then Jabree McClaine and Sierra Pizarro won #3 doubles, 8-4, over Macy Elliot and Joni Baxley.
Taking matches 1,2,3, 5, and 6, ETBU won the match 8-1. Casey, ranked 10th in the nation, defeated #11 ranked Vega, 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 in the #1 match. Stankiewicz then took the #2 match, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, in the second match that went extra sets. In the #3 singles match, Bramlett won, 6-1, 6-1, over Melissa Dyer. Kellie Cawthon took the #5 match, 6-2, 6-0, vs. Baxley and Mullika Seekhieo won #6 match, 6-1, 6-0 overMegan Ingram.
Trinity 8, ETBU 1
ETBU started off down three points after falling in doubles. Casey and Bramlett lost the #1 match, 8-4, and then Stankiewicz/Morton fell in #2, 8-2. Pizarro and McClaine played hard to the end in #3 but lost, 8-6.
Casey won the only point of the match with a 7-5, 6-4, win at #1 singles over Maci Lutz in the battle of top 30 singles players in the nation.
ETBU faces Gustavus Adolphus at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
