Marshall Fire EMS was part of inaugural launching of life-saving app

MARSHALL – The Marshall Fire Department Emergency Medical Services is an integral part of keeping the community safe and healthy. MFD through its EMS division mans three front line ambulances, and has three reserve units.
Under current EMS Supervisor, Battalion Chief Randall Jeans, the MFD’s EMS division serves the community in limiting pain and suffering by providing excellent medical attention.
Because of this, it seems only natural that the MFD EMS division be a part of the implementation of a new life-saving application to provide real-time interaction between field EMS personnel and the critical care team in the hospital.
Launched in early 2013 through the work of Dr. James T. Woodson of Pulsara, and an emergency room physician, who was associated with the Good Shepherd Health System and Leading Edge Medical Associates (LEMA) with the ‘CommuniCare’ telecommunications service apps called STOP STEMI and STOP STROKE were put in the hands EMS personnel.
Randall Jeans of the Marshall Fire Department said that Woodson had been an emergency room doctor in Marshall, and had mentioned to former BC/EMS Chief Bob Cole about the applications, and asked “about giving the devices to our guys in the field.”
Jeans explained that the applications were created to help speed through the process of getting a patient who might be in critical need directly to the treatment they need. The Pulsara applications allows for transmission of an ECG or medication list to the hospital.
“If a patient is having a heart attack or a stroke, and we are out in the field, we can use the application to identify the issue, and we are able to activate the teams in the hospital – cardiologists or neurologist and the labs so that we can push through ER. We can 
transmit a copy of the EKG to the hospital,” Jeans said.
The MFD EMS personnel have been able to utilize the application several times with success since day one.
“We were one of the first departments to have the applications,” Jeans explained.
The Marshall Fire Department EMS continues to move progressively in training and obtaining equipment to be able to provide quality service for the community.
