MISD promotes offensive coordinator Jake Griedl to AD/Head Football Coach
Jake Griedl, who oversaw the most prolific offense in the history of Marshall Mavericks football the last two seasons, has been named the new Athletic Director/Head Football Coach in Marshall ISD.
Griedl was officially introduced to the MISD Board of Trustees during Tuesday’s regular January board meeting. MISD Superintendent Dr. Jerry Gibson announced the new role for Griedl as the replacement for former AD/HFC Claude Mathis, who accepted the Head Football Coach position at DeSoto ISD last week.
MISD hosted a press conference to introduce Griedl to the media and Marshall community Wednesday afternoon.
“Our first priority was to interview our qualified internal candidates before we decided to possibly open it up to the outside,” said Gibson. “With the improvement and growth in our football program the last couple of years under Coach Mathis, we really wanted to try and keep that momentum going by keeping things in-house. During his interview, Coach Griedl shared an impressive, wide-ranging vision for MISD athletics that has us very excited for what the future brings for our student-athletes under his leadership.”
Griedl came to Marshall as Mathis’ Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator in the spring of 2017 after serving as wide receivers coach at Class 6A powerhouse Lake Travis from 2013-2016. Griedl’s time at Lake Travis culminated in 2016 with the Class 6A state championship.
“I am humbled and excited for this opportunity,” Griedl said. “We have accomplished so many things these last couple of years under the leadership of Coach Mathis, and I want to keep that momentum going and go to the next level. Marshall has a great tradition and I expect all of our athletic programs, both boys and girls, to continue improving and moving forward to build on that tradition.”
Prior to Lake Travis, Griedl coached wide receivers at Boerne High School in 2012-2013. His first coaching job came at the collegiate level in 2011-2012, when he served as wide receivers coach/return specialist coach as a graduate assistant at Southern Arkansas University.
At Marshall, Griedl coordinated an offense that ultimately set program season records for points scored and total yards in 2018, as the Mavs won a second straight district championship and went three rounds deep in the playoffs. In seven years as a high school assistant coach, Griedl has worked with teams that have won six district championships and he has coached in a total of 24 playoff games in those seven seasons.
While on staff at Lake Travis, Griedl and the Cavaliers played in two state championship games and three state semifinals.
Griedl also has an extensive background as a strength and conditioning coach, having coordinated offseason weight training and conditioning at both Lake Travis and Marshall.
Griedl received a B.A. in History from Concordia University-Nebraska in 2012, where he was a three-year starter and team captain at slot receiver. He has done postgraduate work at Southern Arkansas University.
A native of Spring, Griedl graduated from Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball in 2007. He and his wife, Garland, have a one-year old son, Griff. Garland also serves in MISD as a nurse at Marshall High School.
