GREEN Machines Parade will visit schools to development environmental awareness
City of Longview and Keep Longview Beautiful are partnering to promote continued ecological education with students. Three parades are planned in the Longview, Pine Tree and Spring Hill school districts to improve student awareness and recognition of the effects litter, illegal dumping and recycling have on our community. Five (5) City vehicles that assist in keeping Longview green and clean will be exhibited ‘parade style’ for hundreds of students. Drivers of each vehicle will demonstrate their “Green Machine’s” capabilities while David Simmons, City of Longview Sanitation and Beautification Manager relates how the vehicles work to help maintain and sustain Longview. Topics that will be discussed are litter prevention, waste reduction, recycling, landfill abatement and storm water pollution. “This is a great opportunity to teach our children how to take care of their community in a way that will be very exciting for them,” says Simmons.
Through an East Texas Council of Governments grant awarded to Keep Longview Beautiful 1,000 Lego GREEN Machines will be distributed among the districts to reward student’s greening efforts. Keep Longview Beautiful also prepared a parade preview video for classroom use and educational packets for grades PreK-5. Kim Droege, Executive Director of Keep Longview Beautiful, stated, “We want this to be a motivational and well-rounded program for our schools. Keep Longview Beautiful understands students are a fantastic conduit for promoting environmental stewardship. When we introduce environmental concepts to kids, we know they will help us promote the importance of ‘greening our community’.”
Donna Pruitt, Community Relations Coordinator for Pine Tree Independent School District commented on their upcoming parade,” Pine Tree ISD welcomes The Green Machine Parade to demonstrate how The City of Longview machines help enhance and sustain our community on a daily basis. Our students are looking forward to the parade and seeing the Green Machines demonstrate what their individual jobs are that benefit all.”
Denise Frederick, principal of Johnston-McQueen Elementary stated, “What is especially powerful about conservation is that it is an area of our curriculum that provides opportunities for students to put meaningful conservation practices into place at an early age. The Green Machines Parade will showcase to students how the City of Longview conserves its precious resources!”
GREEN Machine Parades will begin at 9:00 a.m. sharp on the following dates:
November 18, LISD, Johnston McQueen Elementary, 422 FM 2751
December 2, PTISD, Near Birch Elementary, corner of Birch Drive and Arland Drive
December 9, SHISD, Primary School, 2700 Spring Hill Road
