Sheriff, Police join in holiday DWI task force

HARRISON COUNTY –  The beginning of July means summer is officially here, it is hot, watermelons are ripe, vacation time is here, and family reunions are planned. Of course, there is Independence Day – the July 4 holiday is a favorite among Americans, and has been since we won our freedom from England.

July 4 is also considered to be one of the ‘deadliest days on American highways.’ (Ref: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.)  During this holiday period – drunk-driving incidents account for about 48 percent of traffic deaths.  Texas sees the most drunk driving fatalities of any state in the U.S., and according to the NHTSA, more than one-third of  drunk driving fatalities are non-impaired drivers or passengers.

With that in mind, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and Marshall Police Department, have formed a DWI Task Force. This unit will be out in full force from 8 p.m., Friday, July 1 until 4 a.m. July 4, in order to ensure that the community has a safe holiday weekend, according to release from Marshall Police Deparmtent’s Public Information Officer Justin Mills.

The joint DWI Task Force officers and deputies will be joined by regular-shift officers and deputies to, as Mills wrote, “identify and arrest impaired drivers on area roadways.”

The anti-DWI campaign begins at  8 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 and operate through 4 a.m. Monday, July 4.
