Chaos
Chaos. Doesn’t that word seem to sum up the state of our world today? Every time we turn on the television or read the newspaper or check the latest alert from our smartphone we almost expect to see or hear the worst. The image of Omran Daqneesh, the 5-year old boy who was injured and photographed as he was being treated in the back of an ambulance in Aleppo, Syria is forever seared in my mind. (If you’re unfamiliar with the situation in Aleppo, please read up on the humanitarian crisis happening there and pray). Tensions appear to be at an all-time high in the Middle East and specifically in the Gulf of Adan as warships from the United States, Russia, China and now Iran are all bracing for something terrifying. The heightened state of political affairs in our own country is staggering to see as well. We are less than a month away from electing our 45th President and we could not be a move divided electorate. There seems to be a certain level of hate and vitriol in this election and in our country in general that I’ve not seen before. Our world is seems like an out of control steam engine barreling down the tracks towards chaos.
And while this truth is sad, it is not surprising. Jesus warned His disciples in the Upper Room just before taking on the chaos of the cross. He said “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Peace. Isn’t it comforting to know the source of true peace? It’s especially comforting to know the source of true peace countries wage war against each other and when ISIS attacks. It’s especially comforting to know the source of true peace when the report comes back from the doctor or when you get that phone call that shakes you to your core. It’s comforting to know that chaos is temporal and peace is eternal.
