Lady Wildcats overwhelm Paul Quinn
The Wiley College soccer team was too much for the shorthanded Paul Quinn College Lady Tigers in a 10-0 rout Thursday at Wildcats Soccer Field.
The Lady Wildcats (5-2-1, 2-1-1 in Red River Athletic Conference) scored eight goals in the second half and had eight different players score in the game. Mayara Tyzska, Laura Ilavuna, and Jennifer Daniel Da Silva scored their first career goals.
“I was very happy,” Tyzska said. “I want to be more involved with the offense.”
“It was great seeing Laura score her first goal in her entire life,” head coach Rafael Muniz said. “Mayara scored two off corners. From the beginning of the season, I wanted more people to score goals. We have a lot of people on this team that can score.”
Paul Quinn College played with only nine players – two less than the normal 11. Wiley College set a program record for most goals scored in a single game and largest margin of victory. Rebecca Rios started the scoring with her first goal of the season. Shenelle Henry added a goal with 23 seconds left in the first half to put the Lady Wildcats ahead by two. In the first 11 minutes of the second half, Wiley College scored four goals. Ana Maldonado scored twice in the second half and said they were more aggressive on offense.
“In the first half we weren’t as physical,” Maldonado said. “We played with more intensity in the second half and we kept scoring.”
“We were passing well but struggled on our finishes in the second half,” Muniz said. “I gathered them around and told them to play their game and the goals will come.”
The Lady Wildcats will resume conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday against the University of the Southwest.
