Wildcats fall at University of St. Thomas-Houston
HOUSTON – The Wiley College men’s soccer team had its opportunities but were unable to capitalize in a 2-0 Red River Athletic Conference loss to the University of Saint Thomas-Houston Saturday at Houston Sports Park.
“We had a very good first half,” head coach Demetrio Hernandez said. “Due to fatigue, I had to make some substitutions in the second half. We lost our tempo and never regained it.”
The Wildcats (3-2-1, 1-1 in RRAC) put up 12 shots with five on goal. Abdallah Rayyan led the team with four shots and two on goal. Wiley allowed 16 shots with five on goal. Two of those five found the back of the net in the second half. Erik Reyes made saves on the other three.
Wiley College was only awarded four corner kicks to the Celts’ seven. The game was very physical. Both teams combined for 18 fouls and 11 yellow cards. Three players were ejected for receiving two yellow cards.
The Wildcats will begin a six-game home stand at 3 p.m. Thursday against Louisiana State University-Alexandria, which fell to 3-7 and 0-3 in RRAC play with a 4-0 loss at University of Houston-Victoria. In their last meeting, Wiley College prevailed 3-1 in the RRAC quarterfinals last season.
