UPCOMING TRAVEL SURVEYS
Individuals and businesses will soon be selected to participate

TYLER – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is sponsoring household, workplace, and commercial vehicle travel surveys that will soon be conducted in the Tyler and Longview areas by two transportation research firms, ETC Institute and Gram Traffic Counting.
Beginning this fall, randomly-selected households and workplaces will be mailed notification letters, inviting them to participate in these voluntary surveys. Employees and visitors at participating workplaces may also be given the opportunity to contribute trip-related information as part of this effort. If asked, please consider taking part in this important study. The results will help TxDOT and the Tyler and Longview Metropolitan Planning Organizations prioritize local transportation projects, improve mobility and reduce congestion.
Tyler is quickly becoming a leader in the field of travel research as it relates to helping communities with transportation planning. In 2014, TxDOT conducted the first study of its kind study using Bluetooth, GPS, and cellular data to develop estimates of travel into, out of, and through the study area in Tyler and Smith County. These studies take advantage of emerging technology and have replaced similar studies that were conducted by stopping vehicles at roadside survey stations and asking them where they were coming from and where they were going. TxDOT is currently conducting a similar study in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area and plans to conduct a similar study in the Longview area within the next few years.
