Mavettes bring home awards at competition

MARSHALL, Texas – The Marshall Mavettes brought home several honors and awards from this past Saturday’s American Dance and Drill Team competition held at Kilgore College in Kilgore.

The Mavettes, under the direction of first-year instructor and former Mavette Heather Hill, topped off the competition by earning Sweepstakes (all “1” ratings) and the Gussie Nell Davis Award for officers, team and kick company.

The American Dance and Drill Team competitions were founded by Gussie Nell Davis, who was the first director of the nationally-known Kilgore College Rangerettes, and founder of the precision dance team in the United States.

The Mavettes also won Judges Awards for Officer Jazz, Officer Lyrical, Officer Contemporary, Team Jazz, Team Contemporary and Elite Hip Hop.

Other honors for the Mavettes included:

  • Silver Best Overall for Team
  • Gold Best Overall for Elite
  • Platinum Best Overall for Officers
  • Large Team: 2nd Runnerup for Team
  • Best in Class for Officers
  • Best in Class for Elite Team

The Marshall Mavettes became a part of the Maverick Family in 1969 thanks to the hard work and vision of Mrs. Charlsie Cooke, the first director of the MHS drill team. Since then, the Mavettes have become one of the most respected drill teams in the nation, winning state and national awards at competitions all over the country.

The 2016-2017 Mavettes will host their annual Spring Show on April 28-29.
