As part of a significant redevelopment and recruitment initiative made by the City of Marshall and Marshall Economic Development Corporation to attract and retain new businesses and retail opportunities, national retailers Hobby Lobby and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet plan to open stores this fall and early next year as anchor tenants at the newly renamed “Marshall Place,” formerly known as Marshall Mall.

The Marshall Hobby Lobby store is expected to hire 35 to 50 employees with full-time employees earning $15.35 an hour, and part-time employees earning $10.23 an hour and occupy 48,000-plus square feet of retail space.

Marshall Mayor Larry Hurta said the recruitment of Hobby Lobby and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet speaks to the spur of economic development activity taking place in the area.

“A goal we have is to further retail recruitment, and this is a step to be successful in that venture and continue to make Marshall an attractive market for not only small businesses but big name stores as well. I am thrilled to welcome Hobby Lobby and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet as anchor tenants to our mall. These projects will benefit the community by retaining sales tax revenue in our city, create jobs and help sustain a retail critical mass that will attract other retailers in the years to come as we put Marshall on a path to grow and prosper.”

Hobby Lobby has more than 800 stores across the country, including 101 in Texas, according to the company. Each store offers more than 70,000 crafting and home decor products including floral, fabric, needle art, custom framing, baskets, home accents, wearable art, wedding supplies, arts and crafts, jewelry making, scrapbooking and paper crafting supplies.

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet was founded in 1982 and recently became a public company offering stock to the general public in July of 2015. Ollie’s currently has 275 stores in 22 states. They are currently expanding into the Texas market and Marshall will be one of, if not the first store opening in Texas. Ollie’s is essentially a value-oriented retailer specializing in the sales of floor coverings, books, hardware, housewares, domestics, non-perishable food, as well as 15 other departments. Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is projected to open in February of next year.

“We believe that Hobby Lobby and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet will be a great fit for the community and fill a much-needed void in our retail market, and Hobby Lobby and Ollie’s will also be great community partners,” said Carolyn Dean, a representative of Marshall Place.

The new store locations will also help spearhead Marshall’s economic growth, increase the local tax base and help support partnerships and improvements in areas such as infrastructure, parks and public safety.

Hobby Lobby and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet are two of the most well-known retailers in America and the addition of these two national companies to our business community is a real plus for Marshall and our citizens. This happened in large measure to the foresight, vision, confidence, and commitment of our city leaders and business community to work together to bring these economic development opportunities to Marshall. Hobby Lobby and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet’s decision to open a store in Marshall, at this time, speaks volumes to their confidence in the future of our city as the hub of commerce for the area,” said Director of Community and Economic Development Wes Morrison.

Also of note, is the opening of the new Boot Barn store at Marshall Place. As part of the redevelopment, Boot Barn agreed to have their store relocated to accommodate the necessary space needed for the new Hobby Lobby store. The Boot Barn store has been completely remodeled as a result of their new lease at Marshall Place and is now located next to Blue/Cross Blue Shield. Both Boot Barn and Blue/Cross Blue Shield are also national tenants.

The City of Marshall and Marshall Economic Development Corporation will continue to actively pursue additional business opportunities, including retail to Marshall to improve quality of life for residents.
