Wiley College head men’s soccer coach Demetrio Hernandez announced who he saw as his strongest leaders as Tafadzwa Madamombe and Genaro Trevino were named team captains Tuesday.
“They are very deserving,” coach Demetrio Hernandez said. “Both guys stepped last year and did a very good job. There is no doubt that they will do it again.”
This is the second consecutive season that Madamombe has been named a team captain. He scored key goals against Southwestern Assemblies of God University and against the University of the Southwest in the RRAC Tournament Championship game. Madamombe was named a Champion of Character winner at the conference and NAIA level. He earned the Champion of Character award at the Wiley College Athletics Recognition Ceremony. Madamombe was a Red River Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete after earning a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
“It’s honor to serve my teammates as captain,” Madamombe said. “They are a great group of people. It’s something I look forward to. It motivates me to do better on and off the field. It motivates me to be a role model. I have the experience. I know what to expect from the guys, from the conference and nationals.”
Trevino is about to start his fourth and final season as a Wildcat. He is a starting defender and helped Wiley College reach the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time in 2013. In his sophomore season, Trevino was named Defensive Player of the Year at the Wiley College Athletics Recognition Ceremony. Last season, he was a starter on the RRAC Tournament Championship team and helped the Wildcats reach the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Tournament. Trevino was a Red River Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete.
“I’m very proud about it because I don’t see myself better than anyone else here,” Trevino said. “I told the guys I probably need their help more than they need mine. I’m honored to be chosen as a team captain. I’m more willing to leave it all on the field and be the leader the team needs me to be.”
The Wildcats have two scrimmages against Jacksonville Community College and North American University. The season opener is September 9 at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee Oklahoma.
