RICHARDSON, Texas – The Wiley College volleyball team will have to start a new winning streak on Saturday after a three-set loss against the University of Texas-Dallas (20-25, 17-25, 19-25) Friday in the first game of the UT-Dallas Tournament.
A seven-point run in the first set proved to be insurmountable for the Lady Wildcats. Wiley rallied at the end of the set to get within four but couldn’t complete the comeback. Wiley briefly held the lead in set 2 but couldn’t stop a UT-Dallas run. The third set was close but the Lady Wildcats allowed UT-Dallas to score nine of the last 12 points to seal the match.
Wiley College (5-5) made less attacking errors (18) and serving errors (2) than the Lady Comets (21 and 4, respectively). The Lady Wildcats were hurt by eight receiving errors and eight blocking errors. University of Texas-Dallas only made one of each. Wiley College was outdone on the attack with 30 kills to UT-Dallas’ 43.
Lucille Ricord, who is a Red River Athletic Conference MVP candidate led the team with nine kills. In her second match of the season, Lujien Sallam led the team with 20 assists. Miyah Keller, who is the conference leader in digs per set, led the team with 15 digs. Olena Fedorenko, who is the RRAC leader in blocks per set, led the team with eight.
The Lady Wildcats will look to return to the win column against East Texas Baptist University – which also resides in Marshall – at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to wrap up play in the tournament. This will be their first matchup since 2008.
