Lady Wildcats unable to overcome tough calls at Our Lady of the Lake

SAN ANTONIO – The Wiley College volleyball team played its heart out but were unable to have key calls go their way in a three-set Red River Athletic Conference loss to Our Lady of the Lake University (16-25, 21-25, 17-25).

“I feel we had a few tough calls that killed our momentum,” head coach LaKyva Bason said. “It made it hard for us to finish the game.”

The first set stayed within two points until the Lady Wildcats allowed a 6-1 run. Wiley fell behind by eight in the second set but rallied. Jayme Bazile, Rebecca Moustapha and Alissa Johnson recorded kills. After benefiting from four attack errors, Olena Fedorenko gave Wiley the lead with a kill. The lead was short lived as the Lady Wildcats were outscored 6-1. Wiley fell behind early in set three and didn’t recover.

Moustapha led the team with 10 kills. Sydnie Beckett was Wiley’s top setter with 15 assists and picked up the Lady Wildcats’ only serving ace. Noemi Garza followed with 11. Lucille Ricord led the team with 10 digs. Fernanda Aguiar and Miyah Keller followed with nine and eight, respectively. Bazile and Moustapha led the team with three blocks.

“The girls fought through the tough calls,” Bason said. “They never gave up and stuck together. I couldn’t have asked for more. I’m extremely pleased with all of them.”

The Lady Wildcats (8-8, 3-2 in RRAC) will look to rebound at Huston-Tillotson at 1 p.m. Saturday.
