Lady Wildcats play home opener looking for first Red River Athletic Conference victory

At 1 p.m. Thursday, the Wiley College women’s soccer team will finally get to play in front of a home crowd and hope to get its first Red River Athletic Conference win of the season against Louisiana State University-Alexandria.

“I was here with coach Demetrio Hernandez when the soccer program started,” head coach Rafael Muniz said. “It’s amazing feeling to see my girls get to play on their home field. I would like to thank the whole school for all their work – especially Dr. Joseph Morale for giving us this opportunity. We are hoping to give everyone a great game.”

The Lady Wildcats (2-2-1, 0-1-1) picked up their first win against the Lady Generals in last season’s RRAC quarterfinals. Wiley College is coming off a tie at University of Houston-Victoria and a 2-1 overtime loss at the University of Saint Thomas-Houston.

LSU-Alexandria (5-6, 1-2 in RRAC) picked up its first RRAC win at Houston-Victoria Saturday. It lost 1-0 at home against Texas A&M-Texarkana and a 1-0 overtime loss against St. Thomas. Muniz said he is expecting a good game.

“We are looking to make the RRAC tournament,” Muniz said. “LSU-Alexandria is good. They are physical.”

Wiley College beat Texas A&M-Texarkana 2-1 in double overtime in a nonconference meeting last season. The Lady Eagles are 9-4 and 3-2 in the RRAC. Texarkana defeated Texas College 3-0 on Saturday and have won eight of its last nine.

Muniz said his team just needs to focus.
