Lady Wildcats edge Texas Wesleyan to stay undefeated

FORT WORTH – The Wiley College women’s basketball team jumped out early but had to hold on late in a 59-51 victory over Texas Wesleyan Tuesday.

“I feel good,” head coach Ashley Walker said. “It was a big road win.”

The Lady Wildcats (4-0) pulled away at the end of the first quarter. Alexis Bernstine, who only made two shots in Saturday’s victory over Rust College, scored on a tip-in and shot five for seven in the first half for 12 points. Ariel Taylor made a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the first quarter to put the Lady Wildcats ahead by eight after the first quarter. Wiley College led at halftime 32-24.

In the second half, the Lady Wildcats struggled shooting which allowed Texas Wesleyan to get back into the game. Wiley trailed 42-40 early in the fourth quarter. Anika Nottingham scored on a layup and Ty Colquitt scored on a layup to give the lead back to Wiley.

With the Lady Wildcats leading by one, Sha’ Georgia Williams drove to the basket for a layup. She got a steal and hit a 3-pointer to put Wiley ahead by six. She scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter.

“That’s senior leadership,” Walker said.

Bernstine expanded the lead with a 3-pointer. She stole the ball and took it the distance for a fastbreak layup to give the Lady Wildcats a nine-point advantage. Bernstine finished the game with 20 points and three rebounds.

Malachi McQueen had the second-highest point total for the Lady Wildcats with nine points on a 4-for-12 shooting performance. She was one point shy of a double-double with her 11 rebounds. Taylor Hawkins and McQueen led the team with eight blocks. Lisa Nealey led the team with five assists. Kendra Carolina followed with three. Bernstine led the team with five steals.

The Lady Wildcats will travel to Huntsville, Texas, and face NCAA Division I school Sam Houston State University at 11 a.m. Friday.
