Dr. Jerry Gibson was officially hired as the 23rd Superintendent in the history of Marshall’s public school system during a Special Called Meeting of the Marshall Independent School District Board of Trustees Tuesday evening.
Tuesday capped the end of the 21-day waiting period required by state law following the naming of Dr. Gibson as lone finalist for MISD Superintendent. Dr. Gibson, formerly of Coldspring-Oakhurst ISD, was named lone finalist for the position on May 24 following a unanimous vote by MISD trustees.
“As a board, we appreciate your support and prayers over the past months,” said Mrs. Helen Warwick, MISD Board President. “We have worked very hard to hire the best person we could possibly find to lead MISD. We specifically sought a person who had a proven track record of success at high levels. We unanimously believe we have found that person in Dr. Jerry Gibson.”
Dr. Gibson and his wife, Tammy, are already in the process of purchasing a home in Marshall. His official start date with MISD will be July 1.
“Tammy and I are excited about serving the students, faculty, staff and the city of Marshall through Marshall ISD,” Dr. Gibson said. “Through the interview process, I have grown to appreciate and respect the MISD school board, and I look forward to working with them in the coming years. I am very excited about the opportunities that the students of Marshall Independent School District have been afforded, and I am looking forward to creating more opportunities in the future. Tammy and I look forward to being a part of this historic community and developing friendships and partnerships with the people of Marshall.”
Dr. Gibson replaces Dr. Marc Smith, who resigned as Superintendent in March to become Superintendent in Duncanville ISD.
Dr. Gibson was selected from among an original pool of 52 applicants for the MISD Superintendent position. A 1993 graduate of East Texas Baptist University, he has served as Superintendent at Coldspring-Oakhurst ISD since 2013 after serving as Executive Director of Secondary Education in Waco ISD from 2011-2013.
